It is disappointing that a discipline invoking the highest standards of epistemic integrity must fight so hard to overcome the friction presented by sheer rhetoric. The United States has an outstanding scientific community built upon the highest standards of academic integrity and professionalism; one that is also, unfortunately, forced to at once confront a distrustful Republican sentiment while conscientiously providing data that will remain unpopular and therefore continue to engender suspicion among the party’s supporters. Such persistent skepticism is a challenge that the EU, New Zealand and Canada have been fortunate to (largely) avoid and has provided an inertia that continues to hamper progress by our friends in the U.S. scientific and political communities. -Te Koeti
